Chapter Nineteen

What. A. Game.

Antoni tore it up on the court tonight. Or blew it up, set it on fire, take your pick.

Because the man scored fifty-one points.

Fifty. One.

As I pull up to his gate and punch in the security code, I still can’t believe what I witnessed firsthand this evening. Antoni was a scoring machine. He made passes without even looking at the recipient of it. He did something they called a triple-double, which I had to look up, and overall carried the Copperheads to the first win of the season.

I know Antoni is a superstar. One swim through a Google search tells me that. But seeing it happen before my eyes? Hearing the crowd roar in approval of his basketball greatness? Seeing the entire arena rise as he shoots a long-distance three-point shot or gasp at his mad passing skills?

Antoni has to be one of the greatest players of all time.

And this tremendous basketball player was talking about me in pregame interviews and pointing to me on the court.

Me.

Becca.

I drive through the gates, noticing that Antoni isn’t home yet. He told me this would most likely be the case, as he has media interviews and treatments after the game, and then he said he will need to come home and eat dinner. He said to make myself at home while I wait for him.

I park my car and turn off the engine. I took Abby home, and listening to her talk about how amazing Antoni was, how she had never seen another human play basketball like that, caused a bit of worry to form in my stomach. Or my ulcer to grow worse.

I can’t help it. The anxious part of my brain takes over and I keep thinking, what is this man doing with me?

Ugh. Stop. Stopppppppppppppppp.

I get out of my car and retrieve my overnight bag from the back seat. I head up the walk, and Kasia is excitedly waiting for me to enter. Her tail is wagging as she stares at me through the window next to the door. I smile at her, happy to be distracted by her happiness at seeing me.

I let myself in and greet her, giving her a kiss on the top of her big head, and then I hear my phone vibrate in my purse. I set my stuff down and retrieve it, and sure enough, it’s Antoni:

Finally leaving the arena. Can’t wait to see you.

I firmly shove my anxiety down. I’d prefer to lock it in an awful spooky basement that would terrify me to enter, but since that’s not an option, I’ll have to rely on my mind.

Dicey proposition.

I text him back:

I’m at your house and can’t wait to celebrate those 51 points with you. So proud of you, Antoni!!!

I hit send. I walk into his den, settle down on the sofa, and Kasia jumps up beside me, putting her paws on my legs and giving me a massive kiss on the chin. I pet her, stroking her behind the
